Using high resolution imaging and electrophysiological sensing of smooth muscle cells in the entire mouse colon, researchers at Flinders University (Adelaide, South Australia) have recorded how some 400,000 neurons in the gut actually work—i.e. how the body’s “second brain” functions. Knowing how the enteric nervous system normally works offers a baseline for what happens with disease scenarios. MORE
