“Diagnostic Microbes”

This piece discusses research at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel) where preliminary work has shown how to create artificial plasmids in bacterial cells which can both identify transcription factors and respond with a fluorescent green light to indicate a positive find. So, if this approach could be modified for, say, human erythrocytes, it becomes conceivable that an independently operating genetic device could circulate through the body seeking to identify pathogenic cells.
