New Stem Cell Scaffold for CNS Tissue Transplants

Rutgers’s engineers have created a biodegradable, inorganic hybrid (BHI) scaffold that can deliver stem cells, proteins and drugs to injured or diseased regions of the central nervous system. They report: “our developed three-dimensional (3D) BHI-nanoscaffolds have unique benefits for advanced stem cell therapies: (i) wide-range tunable biodegradation; (ii) upregulated ECM-protein binding affinity; (iii) highly efficient drug loading with sustained drug delivery capability; and (iv) innovative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based drug release monitoring. Hybrid biomaterial scaffolds have been demonstrated to mimic the natural microenvironment for stem cell-based tissue engineering.” MORE
