Inhaled Insulin for Treating Alzheimer’s

For several years, diabetes researchers and Alzheimer’s researcher have suspected that AD may actually be a fourth kind of diabetes. Reflecting that, researchers at Rush University Medical Center are taking part in a clinical trial called “Study of Nasal Insulin to Fight Forgetfulness,” or “SNIFF” for short. 275 adults between the ages of 55 and 85 are enrolled because they present mild cognitive impairment or early onset Alzheimer’s disease. “”Insulin resistance, reduced cerebrospinal fluid insulin levels and reduced brain insulin signals have been found in Alzheimer’s patients, which suggests that a therapy aimed at correcting these deficiencies may be beneficial,” says the clinical trial leader.
