This idea is reasonably close to one that sparked the Industrial Revolution: interchangeable parts. Engineers at the University of California-Riverside have developed a system for 3-D printing of standardized components they describe as “building blocks” for making modular lab equipment capable of pumping, mixing, filtering, and controlling biological or chemical substances.
