3D-printed artificial heart beats just like the real thing
This piece is about a soft artificial heart that mimics a normal human heart, though it beats by compressed air flow. It was created at ETH Zurich using 3-D printing with silicone. The limiting factor was that it only beat for about a half hour before failing, and unfortunately the article doesn’t say how this heart broke. Apparently, the silicone didn’t hold up; so, the search will go on for a more durable material. A video shows the printing process. MORE
