Fat, Inflammation and Insulin Insensitivity

“We [Karolinska Institute] provide a spatial map of human WAT [white adipose tissue] organization and demonstrate that the tissue is composed of multiple cell types that are arranged in specific areas. Furthermore, WAT contains at least three different adipocyte subtypes with distinct phenotypes. Our combined analyses in the fasting and hyperinsulinemic states suggest that only one adipocyte subpopulation responds to insulin, suggesting that adipocyte heterogeneity is a determinant of WAT insulin sensitivity.” MORE
