Legacy of 100,000 Genomes
Ten years ago, the British National Health Service launched the “100,000 Genomes Project,” which now has expanded to a 5 million genomes effort. Science writer Molly Campbell, in her interview with Genomics England director, has a succinct statement about the original project’s legacy: “A particularly impactful application of these technologies [next generation sequencing] is in the study of health and disease. Our deeper understanding of human physiology and pathophysiology at the genetic level is facilitating a personalized and tailored approach to healthcare that considers the individual and their unique constitution, rather than stratifying patients into large, population-size groups.” Not long ago, this statement was completely fanciful.
