DIY, Automated X-Rays
Over half of the 206 bones of an adult human skeleton are in the hands and feet. And, a dropped bowling ball, a split second in a door jam, a fall, and any number of other accidents can break those delicate bones. Because these are common mishaps which can tie up a radiology unit, researchers at Finland’s University of Oulu have developed a small, portable x-ray machine that could be a quick and easy alternative. “Not only is it much smaller than conventional X-ray systems, but because it incorporates built-in radiation shielding, it doesn’t have to kept in a lead-lined room, nor does it have to be operated from a separate area. In fact, it utilizes a video screen to guide patients through the process, showing them how and where to place the injured appendage. It then automatically takes the X-rays, and tells the user if a break is detected.” MORE
