Knitting New Arteries
December 1, 2020 | Terry Sharrer
North Carolina State University and Case Western Reserve University scientists describe in this piece a new means for “knitting” scaffolds for artery regeneration. Their key points are: “a tissue-engineered vascular graft was knitted from a hybrid collagen/PLA yarn; the novel collagen yarn ensured rapid repopulation of endothelial cells; the poly(lactic acid) yarn improved the mechanical performance of the scaffold; the circular knitted structure endowed a compliance similar to the native coronary artery; [and]using established textile technology paved the way for future manufacture and scale up.” MORE
