Except for the number of disorders now screened in neonate testing (61), this piece could have been written in the 1960s when Dr. Robert Guthrie (1916-1995) first developed the baby’s heel stick test with filter paper for phenylketonuria. It is surprising that the American Association for Clinical Chemistry would not have taken this opportunity to argue in favor of broader genetic testing as a baseline for later comparisons in life-long extension of health expectations.
