Medtronic, working with nine European research groups, has developed a prototype device for measuring arterial stiffness (an indicator of hypertension). Looking like a blow dryer, the handheld appliance uses a low power laser and a photonic chip to scan an area of skin. This monitors the skin’s movement relative to the aortic pulse wave velocity in determining arterial stiffness. MORE
