Regenerative Medicine for Baldness

Yokohama National University scientists have shown how it is possible to mass produce “hair follicle germs” for implantation. In their study done with mice they mixed epidermal and mesenchymal cells in a microarray well chip. Over three days, these cells spontaneously aggregated and then separated from each other forming hair follicle seeds (germs is the term they used). Growing up 5,000 of these seeds at a time, they then implanted them on the backs of nude mice and observed hair growth. Critically, it was the oxygen-permeable silicone forming the base of the microarray wells that allowed this approach to work. MORE
