Engineering a Breathing Lung

Columbia University bioengineers have created the first functional lung (rodent) with perfusable and healthy vasculature. Most lung diseases occur in the organ’s epithelium, and what the Columbia scientists did was to decellularize the epithelium while leaving the vascular network and matrix in place. New cells restored the epithelium and the organ functioned normally. MORE
