Hand-Held DNA Sequencer Widely Adopted
August 29, 2017 | Terry Sharrer
Oxford Nanopore Technologies (Oxford Science Park, UK) has had threats of patent infringement against its MinION, after which the company has made changes that improved their machine. This hand-held sequencer, about the size and weight as a deck of cards and costing around $1,000, is capable of sequencing 450 base pairs of DNA per second. This is far less than Illumina’s world famous sequencers, but in many instances, such as insect-transmitted viruses, the MinION performs best in terms of speed and cost. In due course, such a machine may be able to do human genomes quickly and cheaply. MORE
