Watching Memory as It Happens
January 3, 2017 | Terry Sharrer
Brain mapping has brought forward several big science projects around the world which all have the same goal—i.e. to determine the firing code that links neuron patterns to behavior, sensation and memory. This piece reviews many approaches in such work involving fluorescent markers, optogenetics, lasers, and microscopy. For watching memory, researchers observe neural firing patterns in the mouse brain during an activity, and then, when the mice are at rest, seeing the patterns repeat as memories. MORE
