Growing a Midbrain Organoid

The 18th century French neuroanatomist, Felix Vicq-d’Azyr ought to be remembered more often than he is, as he discovered the section of the midbrain, the substantia nigra, which holds the mysteries of Parkinson’s disease. Newer knowledge in that field, however, may be coming from tissue engineers with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research who recently announced their successful culturing of a substantia nigra organoid model with functionally active dopaminergic neurons.
