Fluorescent Heme Detector

Heme is a non-protein compound that is a “cofactor” in protein activity of cells, and is present in hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochrome, and nitric oxide synthase. A new interpretation of heme is its role as a cellular nutrient, and researchers at Georgia Tech have used a ratiometric fluorescent green marker to observe how heme is utilized. This sensor, called “the Green Lantern,” glowed vividly when charged with a laser. MORE
