“Person-on-a-Chip”

There’s a fine art in making miniature human organs. Tissue engineers at the University of Toronto have shown how they can fabricate tiny polymer scaffolds onto which they are able to implant heart or liver cells, which they then build up, layer by layer, into three dimensional structures. When blood vessels develop between the two tiny organs, the “AngioChip” really is a human system on a chip. The liver actually produces urea and metabolizes drugs. MORE
