World’s First Successful Implant of a Bionic Eye

A surgeon at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in England has successfully implanted a working retinal prosthetic in an 80 year old man with age related macular degeneration. The video in this piece describes how a video camera in a pair of eye glasses records images, converts them to electrical pulses, and wirelessly transmits them to a sensor on the retina’s surface which then stimulates the optic nerve. The resulting vision isn’t perfect, but the implantee can see movement and simple shapes though not colors. MORE WITH VIDEO
