Freeze Dried Gut Microbes in a “Smart Capsule”

Electrical engineers at Purdue University propose that a “smart capsule” (about the size of a gelcap) could deliver a medication directly to the large intestine after passing through the stomach and small intestine without consequence. The medication they imagine would be freeze dried gut microbes to replace others associated with irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease. A magnet worn on the patient’s waist would trigger a switch in the capsule resulting in the medication release. MORE
