The technique of taking an animal organ, washing cells out of the extracellular matrix, and then seeding in new cells to regenerate a structure such as a heart, has existed for a few years, but this piece describes work done at Massachusetts General Hospital to regenerate a leg and foot of a rat—a limb that can circulate blood and respond to stimuli. Nerve regeneration was insufficient to give normal control after transplantation, but that is a foreseeable accomplishment to come. MORE WITH VIDEO
