Tele-Robotic Ultrasound

It has been nearly fourteen years since a surgeon in New York removed the gall bladder of a woman in Strasbourg, France, using a Zeus surgical robot. While that was a remarkable demonstration, tele-robotic surgery has not become commonplace. But now Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York is testing whether or not a robotic arm, fitted with an ultrasound probe, can accurately diagnose plaque in the carotid artery of patients in Chicago. Like Operation Lindbergh in 2001, the issue may be less about technological possibilities than of ethical-legal-social concerns. MORE
