First Lab-Grown Contracting Muscle

Bioengineers at Duke University took human stem cells that had progressed to being myogenic precursors and grew them up 1,000-fold. They then embedded this tissue on a 3D scaffold with a nourishing gel and tested the resulting regenerated muscle for response to electrical pulses, natural biochemical and drugs. They found that their lab-grown muscles functioned much like natural muscle. MORE
