Obesity seems to account for the rise of Type 2 diabetes in children, while an increase in Type 1 among adults has been observed without explanation. This is a reversal of the usual trend. In order to diagnose Type 1, which presents antibodies in blood, Stanford University researchers have developed a gold nanoparticle microfluidics chip that quickly and inexpensively determines which form of diabetes a patient has, from a drop of blood.
