About half of all premature babies, born at or before 30 weeks gestation, suffer vision damage called “retinopathy of prematurity.” Usually, few are diagnosed at birth. To address this pediatric ICU nurses at the University of Oklahoma took pictures of the babies’ eyes and transmitted them to image analysts at the University of Pennsylvania, who could then suggest immediate ophthalmology treatment.
