Metabolic Rate Sensor

Bioreactors can be as big as a house—stainless steel vessels in which, for example, tons of recombinant E. coli pump out human insulin. Or they can be matchbox-sized containers for biochemistry labs. In either case, sensors that can detect nutrient changes going on in the reactor can tell when the process is complete. This piece describes a commercial sensor from the English firm Stratophase, Ltd (Romsey, Hampshire) which uses a micro-optical sensor to measure the refractive index of the ferment. MORE
