Owners of Canon SLR cameras are familiar with the EOS concept—i.e. eye operating system for autofocusing. Now, something like that, though much more sophisticated, comes in the form of implantable intraocular lens for the eye. Elenza (Roanoke, VA) has put the technology of 189 patents in its device featuring liquid crystal optics, micro electronics, algorithms that predetermine near, intermediate and distant focal points, and solid state ceramic rechargeable batteries that have an expected recharging life of 50 years. The company expects to have a commercial product ready to market in 2018. MORE
