CMS Expands (slightly) Telemed Reimbursement

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid are gradually (perhaps glacially) moving to support telemedicine by expanding the location of coverage and increasing physician reimbursement fees. Heretofore, CMS limited telemedicine services to rural areas were distances between doctor and patient added to the government’s cost. In 2014, locations on the edge of metropolitan areas will be included, and consultation fees will be increased from $20/call to about $24.50/call. This still does not address the situations involving “economic distance” where a patient may be relatively close to a healthcare provider but still unable to make an appointment in person. MORE
