Both Medtronic (Minneapolis, MN) and Johnson & Johnson (New Brunswick, NJ) are developing artificial pancreases based on an insulin pump and device for continuous glucose monitoring. The key in each instance is the algorithm that keeps in insulin infusion at a precise and proper rate. Metronic’s A.P. works with a smart phone and doesn’t require patient input of glucose levels.
