Implanted Brain Stimulator for Dystonia

Deep brain stimulation—involving an electrical lead to each hemisphere and a pulse generator implanted near the collarbone—has been used successfully for treating Parkinson’s disease, but now neuro-scientists in Los Angeles and Boston have used DBS to treat general hereditary dystonia. With both diseases, the implanted device allows suffered to minimize their drug regime, which often carries several undesirable side effects. So far, there is no cure for PD or dystonia. MORE
