Aiming to Regenerate Intestinal Immunity

While polio is close to being the second human disease to be eradicated, knowledge of it is useful for understanding other illnesses, such as prion diseases. Both polio virus and prions replicate in gut-lymphoid tissue known as the Peyer’s patches. Further, deterioration of gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) is implicated in many immune systems disorders. This piece reports that researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine have made important discoveries about GALT and hope to use those insight for regenerating this tissue. MORE
