Watson on Antioxidants

Nutritionists have made a strong case for fruits and vegetables, which are high in antioxidants, as a cancer preventative. But exactly how this works and how much of antioxidants are needed remains fuzzy. Into this issue, Nobel laureate James Watson has proposed a new theory that could be a truly “disruptive innovation.” Watson argues, in late stage cancer, antioxidants actually promote tumor growth by retarding natural cell death. He suggests that a diet rich in antioxidants actually suppresses the cancer killing effects of chemotherapy and radiation. And, he calls this discovery “among my most important work since the double helix.” MORE
