The Payoff for Staying Well
January 8, 2013 | Terry Sharrer
Wellness is hard to define, though most who have given it some thought suppose it means something more than the absence of disease—perhaps some synergy of physical, mental, and spiritual happiness. However, a more meaningful definition might simply be in extending healthy life expectancy (as compared to average life expectancy) over time. This piece says staying well can add 14 years to a person’s life. Fourteen more years added to average life expectancy at birth today would push overall US life expectancy to 92.2 years, with 89.6 years for men and 94.6 for women. Meanwhile, the US now ranks 37th among all nations for life expectancy at birth. MORE
