This piece describes research at UCLA’s Laboratory of Integrative Neuroimaging aimed at understanding and treating smoking addiction. Investigators used functional MRI brain scans as subjects observed pictures related to smoking, and then applied computerized machine learning methods to analyze behavior from resisting to accepting their cravings. Though the story doesn’t mention how this approach might be used for pain management, this seems like a probable application. MORE
