Researchers at the University of California-San Diego have developed what they call a “smart” polymer that can encapsulate medications or imaging agents in an implantable hydrogel. A low power near infrared light source can then penetrate the skin up to 4 inches and release the polymer’s cargo. This could be especially useful for packing a tumor’s bed after surgery. MORE
