New Discovery in Cell Death: Necroptosis

Cells become cancerous when they loose their ability to undergo programmed cell death (known as “apoptosis”). Until recently, apoptosis was the only known mechanism of natural death, but researchers at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre in London have discovered another pathway named “necroptosis.” Further, they believe that drugs that activate proteins in this pathway open a new line of defense against “immortal” cells.
