USDA Funding Rural Telemedicine Projects
February 28, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
The USDA is offering $34.7m in grants for 45 telemedicine projects and 61 for distance learning. It appears that nearly all of the projects are identified already, but the variety of programs may be instructive for other funding sources. Rural health draws Medicaid funding partly because of the travel distances involved for patients in remote areas. So far, the concept of “economic distance” hasn’t played into this thinking, but a handicapped elder who is relatively close to a care provider might be “on the other side of the Moon” when it actually comes to access.
