Scripps’ Study of Personal Genomics
February 22, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
Last year, an FDA report about the superficiality of personalized genomics tests forestalled drug stores selling those kits. Two years earlier, however, the Scripps Translational Science Institute (San Diego, CA) began the first large study of how consumers respond to genomic testing and counseling. Their results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Jan. 12, 2011 and indicated that the vast majority of participants in the study had no heightened anxiety about the results no matter what the tests revealed about 20 health conditions (including diabetes, heart disease and cancer). The study will continue until 2028 to see if this information changes the participants’ behavior. MORE
