Tongue Stimulation to Prevent Sleep Apnea
January 4, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
San Diego-based ImThera has developed an implantable device to prevent sleep apnea-though it is not yet available for sale in the US. The three-part system consists of a small electrode that is implanted near the lower jaw on the Hypoglossal Nerve. A pulse generator implanted in the upper chest sends a charge that, in effect, tickles the tongue and thereby prevents airway blockage. An external controller allows the patient to adjust the pulse and also sends data to the physician’s computer. MORE
