Smarter Hospital Beds
January 18, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor John LaCourse, at the University of New Hampshire, has created algorithms that can connect a sensored hospital bed to devices that monitor a patient’s condition. Preventing bed sores is an obvious application, but monitoring respiration, temperature, movement and blood pressure are even more useful. LaCourse hopes to interest bed manufacturers such as Stryker and Hilrom in this new capability. The story makes no mention of how this might be used for hospital beds in patients’ homes, but that is a logical extension. MORE
