Imagine “microcapsules” that secrete nanoparticles as they move, leaving behind a chemical trail for other microcapsules to follow. Then, think of these capsules exchanging nanoparticles that trigger a group to assemble and discharge their “cargo.” From there, it doesn’t take much of a leap in imagination to grasp that these are artificial cells behaving much like natural organisms-and are inventions of the University of Pittsburgh’s chemical engineers.
