Nation’s Lowest Hospital Readmission Rate
October 12, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
“Treat and street” is a slang expression that translates to a short length of stay (LOS) in the hospital. While all hospitals aim for a low LOS, the flip side is a potentially higher readmission rate. Baylor’s Heart & Vascular Center (Dallas) proudly claims the lowest readmission rate in the nation at 17.3% of its discharges (the national average is 24.5%). It may also have a low LOS, because it sends its more serious cases to the Baylor Medical Center. The upshot is that performance benchmarks do not necessarily give the full picture of quality care.
