“Treat and street” is a slang expression that translates to a short length of stay (LOS) in the hospital.  While all hospitals aim for a low LOS, the flip side is a potentially higher readmission rate.  Baylor’s Heart & Vascular Center (Dallas) proudly claims the lowest readmission rate in the nation at 17.3% of its discharges (the national average is 24.5%).  It may also have a low LOS, because it sends its more serious cases to the Baylor Medical Center.  The upshot is that performance benchmarks do not necessarily give the full picture of quality care.           MORE
