Restricting Salt in the Diet
February 23, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
If American men could cut their daily salt intake from an average of 10 grams to 7, and women, from 7 to 4, the effect could prevent some 92,000 deaths a year, and save $24b in associated medical costs. While this assertion likely is true, a more detailed analysis of dietary salt intake would subclassify people into normotensives, normotensives who are salt sensitive, hypertensives who are and who are not salt sensitive, and salt wasters (who need more than average dietary salt to survive).
