Anti-Bleeding Balloon
February 9, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Every war produces new medical technology because every war is different. Afghanistan and Iraq have produced more than their fair share of shrapnel wounds because of roadside bombs. Like triangular bayonet injuries of old, shrapnel leaves deep gashes with heavy internal bleeding. To address this, CardioCommand (Tampa, FL) has developed a two layer (nylon and polyurethane) balloon that can be inserted, inflated to conform to the wound shape, and stop bleeding in 90 seconds. This might be useful for our own mean-street culture. MORE and see a video demonstration of the device.
