IR Endoscope
January 19, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Professor Huikai Xie, director of the Biophotonics and Microsystems Laboratory at the University of Florida, has developed an endoscope that has an infrared scanner and mirror at its tip instead of the tradition microcamera. With this, a gastroenterologist can look for tumors beneath the epithelium’s surface-by about two millimeters-and perhaps detect malignancies earlier. So far this has proved its principle in animal studies. Further improvement will address miniaturization for human use, but Xie has formed WiOptix, Inc. to commercialize the product. MORE
