Technology Review has a special section where it identifies talent under the age of 35. Every person TR mentions is remarkable in one way or another, but Jose Gomez-Marquez deserves special mention because of his work in devising inexpensive, easy-to-use medical devices for use in underdeveloped countries. In one project, he used a simple paper-based urine test device that had an embedded code which revealed when wet. To encourage users to phone in their results, he arranged for an adherence incentive of earning cell phone minutes. Gómez-Marquez also believes that using simple materials in a kit he devised, physicians in poor countries will be able to develop their own tools for delivering better health. MORE
