IOM Recommendations on Comparative-Effectiveness Research

Comparative- effectiveness research aims to generate evidence about medical treatment choices. Finding that old fashioned diuretics are generally more effective than angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or calcium channel blockers in hypertensives older than 55 years is an example of this approach. Recently, in response to the $1.1b federal “stimulus” funding for comparative-effectiveness research, the Institute of Medicine recommended 100 high priority study areas (culled from 1,268 nominees) that should get support.
