Bedsores on the Rise

In the wake of Medicare’s new rule that it will no longer reimburse hospitals for patients’ pressure ulcers acquired during care (nor can the costs be passed on to the patients) a report from the Agency for Health Research and Quality notes that hospital acquired bed sores increased by nearly 80% between 1993 and 2006. The best spin on this is that hospitals are seeing greater numbers of elderly patients. Salaries and working conditions for nurses might be an alternative explanation. MORE
