While NASA has developed a tiny biosensor that might be used to detect microorganisms on other planets, the device has an immediate application here on Earth-to identify trace amounts of as many as 25 pathogens within minutes. A company in Troy, NY, “Early Warning,” has licensed the carbon nanofiber technology for testing biohazards and expects to have a commercial product available this year. The nanofibers work by detecting electrochemical signals. MORE
